This Month's Church Planting

Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 10:6-13

Discussion Objective:

Opening

God manifests Himself in many ways. One of the ways most readily seen is through scripture. No other literary work is a living, yet unchanging, message from God. No man has been able to produce text that speaks to us. His word is inspired by Him, not man.

Truth has become an ambiguous term in society today. Many believe whatever society as a whole deems as true, must be correct. Cultural relativism is (or was since I wrote this 20+ years ago) a popular term used to describe this phenomenon. One example of cultural relativism was Adolph Hitler and the Nazi regime. They deemed it was okay to kill people pf other races with no repercussions within their boundaries. Therefore, they tried to change truth so that it was not wrong to kill someone if it fit certain criteria. One may say that was then and it doesn't occur today. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many people, especially amongst the younger generations, believe truth can be derived through human process. In other words, truth is a moving target. Does anyone have the right to change His law or truth?

The Christian must understand that God's word is truth. God chose to manifest His guidelines to us in a wonderful, never-ending way. Scripture has stood the test of time and will continue to guide the Christian if he will simply believe and look to it for: Personal Examples, Personal Encouragement, and Personal Exhortation.

Personal Examples

A pattern; a model or copy; an illustration of a rule or precept; sample

6. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.
7. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”
8. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.
9. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,
10. nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.
11. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

V6-11: God has provided a plethora of examples in His word from which we my draw. The joys, trial, and tribulations of people of biblical times are given to help modern day Christians understand that they are not alone.

Personal Encouragement

That which gives courage or incites to action or perseverance

12. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
13a. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

V12-13a: One of the wonderful things about the living truth found in the Bible is that His words can affect Christians differently at varying times. One can read a scripture and it not evoke a strong reaction. In other times, the same scripture can give encouragement in a time of need. The scripture is living, yeat always true.

Question 3

13b God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

V13b: Not only does scripture build foundations by giving personal examples and providing encouragement for individuals, but it is also an avenue through which God can walk alongside the Christian. God gives the guidance needed to make it through the Christian's brief walk on earth.
