This Month's Topic: Finding Purpose in Your Life
Scripture Reference: Philippians 2:1-11
Discussion Objective: Humility is an essential foundation for a true disciple to find his or her true purpose in life.
We will be discussing most Philippians 2 this week and next week, then going to the 3rd chapter to finish out our discussion of finding purpose in your life. Always keep in mind that Paul was chained to a guard in prison when this letter was written.
Also, this is written to the Church at Philippi which was in an area known for for both godlessness and having many false gods.
Paul is petitioning the church to have the mind of Christ "complete my joy (Paul's) by being of the same mind (Christ's)". As individual disciples of Christ, what does being in full accord and of one mind look like?
- So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,
- complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
- Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
V1-3: What is humility? Why is ranking yourself lower than others important as a disciple?
Remember that this is addressed to the church, not the community at large they are trying to reach. How do you see Christ being "emptied" in your recall of scripture?
4. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
6. who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
7. but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
V4-7: How do we benefit by taking the form of a servant to Christ as His disciple?
What does "exalting" Christ look like in our daily lives as disciples?
8. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
9. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
10. so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
V?-?: Go over why we sing/worship to Christ not about us or Christ in Christland's worship.
How can you better humble yourself in service to Christ this week?
