Each Given a Gift

This Month's Topic: Spiritual Gifts

Scripture Reference: Ephesians 4:1-8

Discussion Objective:

Opening

The big takeaway from Ephesians is: The Gospel should affect the way we live our lives personally, in our communities, and with our families. This is the essence of why our spiritual gifts are given. We are not talking about natural abilities and passion areas of our lives which are also given by God but rather the true spiritual gift/s we are given by the Holy Spirit for kingdom work.

Paul is talking to the people of Ephesus and challenging them to continue moving forward. What does it mean for a disciple of Christ to be called?

1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

V1-3: Take each of the adjectives in verse 2 and give an example of how it relates to verse 3.

4 There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call —
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

V4-6: Discuss how unity does not mean uniformity.

How do you understand verses 7 and 8?

7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.
8 Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”

V7-8: Comments and/or follow up questions

Reflect on the gifts that were indicated as a strong possibility last week and they fit into your daily life as a disciple.
