This Month's Topic: Hands On Prayer
Scripture Reference: Luke 22:39-46
Discussion Objective:
While this is not directly related to the hands on part of prayer, it is a great reminder that we should be intentional with prayer. Hands on gives a strong mechanism as an intentional focus.
Why do you think Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray? Was it simply habit, or was there something special about that location for him?
39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
V39-40: How does Jesus's invitation to pray relate to his own impending suffering?
Why do you think an angel appeared to strengthen Jesus? What does this suggest about the nature of prayer and God's response to it?
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed,
42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
V?-?: How does verse 44 help us understand the intensity of Jesus's struggle and the depth of his commitment to following God's will?
Why do you think the disciples were sleeping? Does their sleep represent a failure on their part?
45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow,
46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
V?-?: How does Jesus's final exhortation in verse 46 connect back to his initial invitation in verse 40? What does this repetition suggest about the importance of prayer, especially in the face of trials?
How can you cultivate a deeper commitment to prayer, especially when we are facing difficult situations?
