This Month's Topic: Understanding Spiritual Reality
Scripture Reference: Matthew 8:18-27
Discussion Objective:
Jesus is in the midst of His earthly ministry and asking disciples to follow him as He performs miracles as prophesized by Isaiah. We will explore chapter 8 beginning with verse 18-27 tonight and follow up next week with verse 28 through the end of the chapter. It will be come apparent that Satan does not like what Jesus is doing and that is still a reality for today.
Can anyone give us an insight that struck you from reading Job this past week? It's obvious that Satan is real as we looked at last week. Tonight go to the NT as Jesus is teaching and how Satan is still on the prowl.
18. Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side.
19. And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
20. And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
V18-20: The crowds were growing and Jesus decides He needs to go to the other side of the sea. Describe the role of a scribe. What is your reaction to verse 20?
You can imagine many were coming up to Jesus and asking Him to allow them to follow His teaching journey. What kind of message was Jesus sending in verse 22?
21. Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
22. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”
23. And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him.
V21-23: What kind of person do you think would be getting into the boat?
Jesus was physically and most likely emotionally exhausted from healing and teaching. He knew the same types of thing would be happening on the other side so He is sleeping. Describe the scene on the boat as you see it in your mind's eye.
24. And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
25. And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”
26. And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”
V24-27: Discuss verse 27 in light of the kind of people you described getting into the boat earlier. This is obviously going to upset Satan as we will see next week in the following verses.
If you couldn't complete Job, do so. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you if you would have been able to get into the boat. What evidence is there to support your life as a disciple?
