This Month's Topic:
Scripture Reference: Hebrews 5:5-10
Discussion Objective: To remember Jesus is a high priest who cam sympathize with us.
The first 4 verses of this chapter go over the fact that priests were appointed "to act on behalf of men" so they could offer sacrifices for sins. Yet they were "beset with weakness" as we all are and had to offer sacrifice for his own sins to cleanse himself for others.
Why is it important we remember that God appointed Jesus as the high priest?
5. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;
6. as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”
V5-6: What is the difference between going to a priest for confession and being transparent when allowing people to pray for you?
How do you respond when you hear someone crying loudly?
7. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
V7: We see that Jesus approached God the Father with a sincere and reverent heart - humbling himself even in his relationship to the Father. What are some of the different ways you can think of that someone might choose to approach God (or different attitudes they might have when they pray to him?) (e.g. looking for something, angry, etc.)
Jesus learned obedience through suffering - what are some ways you have truly learned through obedience?
8. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
9. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
10. being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
V8-10: How does it give you assurance knowing that Jesus was designated by God as a high priest for eternity?
Often times it is hard to forgive ourselves. During your prayer times this week, ask for forgiveness from Jesus with faith that it will be forgiven and for the strength to genuinely accept His forgiveness.
